“Session 2 Summary The party awoke after their first night on the Triboar Trail and prepared to continue towards Phandalin. A thick fog covered the road, while a solitary black bird circled overhead before flying east. Lysandra investigated whether the fog was magical, while Khravlin used Druidcraft to predict the natural weather and determined that the mist should have begun clearing. Its continued presence suggested that something unnatural was sustaining or influencing it. The party agreed on a marching order, with Kirdan scouting ahead. Khravlin carried Sister Arlanna’s sealed satchel, with Arlanna protected in the centre of the formation. Kirdan examined a warning written on the regional map advising travellers to wait out the fog. His investigation revealed that the warning referred to a concealed fork in the road rather than an impassable threat. The group continued cautiously and eventually reached Phandalin. In the town square, the party found residents discussing a man who had fled east from the Stonehill Inn, pursued by a young tiefling woman. They also examined a freshly pinned notice requesting information about unnatural fog, missing couriers and black tokens. The notice directed information to Sister Garaele at the Shrine of Luck and contained signs of Harper involvement. The party entered the Stonehill Inn to gather information. Khravlin used his family’s connection to brewing to establish an immediate rapport with Toblen Stonehill. In private, Toblen explained that a nervous man named Bracken had entered the inn carrying a dark satchel. Bracken had been watching the road, asking whether anyone had arrived from Neverwinter carrying a sealed religious satchel. After being recognised, he fled east and was pursued by a tiefling woman. Toblen also revealed that Bracken had dropped or carried a black metal token resembling the one recovered from the party’s attackers. Toblen had already lied to protect the party by denying that anyone matching their description had arrived. Khravlin promised him two casks of ale in thanks, securing Toblen’s continued silence and support. Arlanna concluded that Bracken’s knowledge of the satchel proved the party’s route and mission had been compromised. She convinced Khravlin that their duty was not complete merely because they had reached Phandalin: the satchel still needed to be delivered safely to a trustworthy recipient. The party visited the Shrine of Luck and met Sister Garaele. Garaele confirmed that Bracken had been working for her as an observer, although Arlanna had never been informed of his presence. Bracken had been sent west to watch the road for interference but had also been conducting additional covert work inside the enemy’s network. Lysandra requested and received a blessing from Tymora. Garaele gave her a small shrine token and a temporary blessing of good fortune. Tensions then rose over the sealed satchel. The party demanded that Arlanna reveal its contents or allow them to open it. Under pressure, Arlanna disclosed that it contained a reliquary holding a fragment known as the First Dawn, three prepared substances called Sun Ash, Dawn Tincture and White Laudanum, a consecrated sun-disc of Lathander, documents for Halia Greywind and twenty gold pieces intended for operational expenses. After further debate, Arlanna opened the satchel herself at the shrine, accepting responsibility for breaking the temple seal. The party immediately began examining its contents. They discovered that: - The reliquary contained a pale, glasslike fragment with a faint golden light inside it. - The consecrated sun-disc interacted magically with the reliquary. - The token possessed seven radial grooves, one of which illuminated when brought near the relic. - The magic surrounding the relic involved both protection and verification. - Sun Ash could reveal heat, disturbances or hidden markings. - Dawn Tincture appeared sensitive to natural or magical light. - White Laudanum appeared capable of suppressing dreams, visions or magical influence. - The plants used to pack the reliquary had begun to grey and wither, suggesting the fragment was slowly affecting nearby living material. - A copied diagram showed the sun-disc being inserted into a seven-symbol stone mechanism at an old cairn east of Phandalin. - The visible symbols included First Light, the Unclouded Eye and Last Ember. - A note stated that the correct sequence must be witnessed rather than merely remembered. Taalmek became convinced that the relic was part of a larger containment or sealing system. He declared that it now needed to be actively protected and that the party should travel to the Barrow of Silent Rites before their enemies could reach or open it. The party left Phandalin in haste and followed Bracken’s trail east. Before reaching the barrow approach, they found Bracken critically wounded beside the road, with Evangeline Silverpetal kneeling beside him. He had been struck by a poisoned crossbow bolt, and several attackers had searched his satchel before fleeing towards the barrow. Taalmek cast Healing Word, preventing Bracken from dying and restoring him to consciousness. Evangeline then confronted the party, using Thaumaturgy to amplify her voice and demanding that they identify themselves. Lysandra openly introduced herself and explained their mission. Bracken attempted to support their account, although Evangeline repeatedly silenced him while she assessed whether the party could be trusted. Kirdan unsuccessfully attempted to persuade Evangeline to remove the crossbow bolt. She correctly refused, recognising that it was barbed, poisoned and potentially preventing further blood loss. Khravlin ignored Evangeline’s attempts to control the conversation and successfully intimidated Bracken into explaining exactly what had happened. Bracken revealed that: - His cover within the enemy network had been exposed. - Two humans and a goblin had ambushed him. - The goblin had fired the poisoned bolt. - The attackers had demanded to know whether the sun-disc had reached Phandalin. - They stole his route notes, intelligence on the barrow and a folded message concerning an unknown agent operating inside Phandalin. - The goblin bore the black mark directly on its skin. - A tattooed goblin named Rizzlik controlled the barrow approach. - Goblins and hired human blades were preparing an ambush. - The enemy knew that the party was coming and that they carried the key. - Three stacked stones marked a narrower alternative route towards the barrow. Bracken clarified that he had not been carrying a relic. His value lay in intelligence, stolen messages and his ability to operate within the enemy network. He had carried a black token only to maintain his cover. Arlanna confronted Bracken about what he had revealed to the enemy. He stated that he had not disclosed her name, but that Halia Greywind’s involvement had already been known inside the network. This raised the possibility that Halia had been compromised or deliberately exposed. Evangeline then challenged the party’s focus on the satchel, pointing out that Bracken needed proper medical help. Taalmek attempted to treat the poisoned wound but failed the Medicine check. Bracken lost consciousness, although he remained alive due to the earlier Healing Word. Feeling responsible, Taalmek lifted Bracken with a natural 20 Athletics check. He carried him carefully without disturbing the bolt or worsening the wound and began taking him back towards Phandalin for treatment at the Shrine of Luck. The session ended with Bracken alive but in urgent need of care, Evangeline travelling with the group, the relic exposed and the enemy preparing at the Barrow of Silent Rites. A horn sounded from the direction of the wooded ridge as the unnatural fog gathered around the barrow. Key Unresolved Threads - Can Sister Garaele save Bracken from the poison? - Who is the enemy agent operating inside Phandalin? - Is Halia Greywind compromised? - What exactly is the First Dawn fragment containing or suppressing? - Why has one of the seven channels on the sun-disc already awakened? - What is the correct sequence for the barrow mechanism? - What role do the black tokens play in opening or corrupting the barrow? - How prepared is Rizzlik’s ambush? - What does Evangeline ultimately want from Bracken and the stolen message?”
