Materia Book 1: A Survivalist's Guide

Previously on Materia Book 1: A Survivalist's Guide

Last time, the party sold off nearly their entire loot hoard to the Nephilim merchant Joshua for close to 3,500 gold, kick-starting Fort Goblin's economy while Adora quietly lied to Darlene's grieving husband Alfred and sent him toward the fairy circle. On the road to Bagrest, the Black Fox's bandits shook the party down for 30 gold before a nighttime direwolf ambush tested their mettle — Gearforge's tridrones obliterated one wolf in a single devastating turn, Adora's Dissonant Whispers sent another fleeing in terror, and Steve finished the last one from the shadows. The session closed with two mysterious roadside treasure chests looted and the gates of Bagrest finally within reach.

The Story So Far

The party are displaced dead from Ethelas, apparently reborn on an unfamiliar material plane by some divine or cosmic force they still don't understand — and the scale of that displacement keeps growing, with waves of other Elthelians turning up and a Nephilim king already issuing citizenship decrees to accommodate them. Fort Goblin is becoming a real settlement: a treasury, a census, a forge, a gold mine, and a growing population of refugees and skilled tradespeople, but also 80% unemployment, 52% unrest, and at least one dark secret buried in a lie to a baker's husband. Now the party is pushing into Nephilim civilization proper, heading to a diplomatic feast in Bagrest that could define their relationship with the kingdom of King Marduk — and everything they've built back home depends on how that goes.

Open Threads

  • The diplomatic feast with the mayor of Bagrest is imminent — the party's standing with Nephilim civilization and Fort Goblin's path to citizenship under King Marduk's decree hangs on this meeting.
  • Alfred, Darlene's husband, was sent toward the fairy circle by Adora — he is almost certainly lost, dead, or trapped, and the lie is still unresolved.
  • Marissa Davenport and Lucien's faction are now openly hostile after Adora's Suggestion spell — they know where Fort Goblin is and have soldiers.
  • The two roadside treasure chests looted at the end of Session 9 have not been fully inventoried — exact contents are unknown.
  • Lana Goldseeker found gold in the hills around Fort Goblin, but the mine has not been developed or secured yet.
  • The pantheon of gods has apparently shifted in some strange way according to local priests — no one has investigated what that means or whether it connects to the party's rebirth.
