The party is escorting a sealed Lathander reliquary containing a fragment of the ancient Dawnseal toward the Barrow of Silent Rites, where a seven-symbol mechanism awaits a sequence that must be witnessed rather than remembered. A hidden faction called the Covenant of the Veil, directed by a handler known only as The Rook, already knows the party carries the key and is mobilizing goblins and hired blades under a goblin commander named Rizzlik to intercept them. Behind this threat looms Vaelor, Herald of Ruin, a fallen celestial tied to the Dawnseal's corruption, though the party has no knowledge of him yet. Bracken Vey, a wounded courier with ties to both Sister Garaele and the enemy network, now lies critically injured as Evangeline Silverpetal, pursuing him for her own reasons, has joined the party at the roadside.
